    • Yes, some previous skiing experience is required. You do not need to be an expert skier, but you should be comfortable moving on skis for multiple days in winter conditions while pulling a pulka (sled). Previous ski touring, cross-country skiing or endurance-based mountain experience is helpful. If you’re unsure whether the trip is right for your level, get in touch and I’m happy to advise.

    • I run expedition training camps in St. Moritz Switzerland in January, February and March 2027.

  • Expect temperatures between approximately -10°C and -30°C, although weather in the Arctic can always be unpredictable. Wind makes it feel significantly colder. With the right clothing, good systems and proper expedition management, people are often surprised at how manageable the conditions feel.

  • Yes, Svalbard is polar bear territory and encounters are possible. Safety is taken extremely seriously. We use robust expedition protocols, continuous vigilance and appropriate safety equipment throughout the journey. Travelling in polar bear country is part of what makes Svalbard such a unique wilderness experience. Each night we do ‘polar bear watch’ when each team member is on duty.

  • A high level of fitness is required. These are expedition-style journeys involving consecutive days of skiing while pulling a sled across varied snow conditions. You do not need to be an elite athlete, but you should enjoy endurance challenges and be comfortable spending long days outdoors in cold environments. Preparation guidance will be provided in advance.

  • You will need personal cold-weather clothing, ski equipment, boots, a warm sleeping bag and expedition essentials. A full equipment list will be provided well in advance. Expedition equipment including pulka, tents, stoves and group safety equipment is provided.

  • Yes, certain equipment can be rented in Longyearbyen, and I can also advise on rental or purchase options before the expedition. If you are missing key kit, we can discuss the best solution depending on your experience and where you are travelling from. Please note that bringing your own skis and ski boots is highly recommend, there is only one rental shop in town.

  • No, previous polar experience is not essential. However, prior multi-day winter travel, ski touring, mountain endurance or expedition experience is highly beneficial. These trips are best suited to adventurous people who are comfortable stepping outside their comfort zone.

  • You will fly to Longyearbyen Airport (LYR) in Svalbard, usually via Oslo. Most international travellers connect through Oslo before flying onwards to Svalbard.

  • Comprehensive travel and expedition insurance is mandatory and must include cover for Arctic travel, medical treatment, evacuation and trip interruption/cancellation. It is your responsibility to ensure your policy covers the specific nature of the expedition. I am happy to recommend providers if needed.
